Job Description

Duties

The following accountabilities are not exhaustive and may include others as directed from time-to-time.

 

  • Lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of interactive reports and dashboards (primarily in Power BI) to support research, operations, and strategic decision-making across MWI and AFPP.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable insights through advanced data visualisation and statistical analysis using tools such as R, Stata, or Python.
  • Drive best practices in reporting standards, visual storytelling, and user experience, ensuring clarity, consistency, and impact across all deliverables.
  • Identify reporting and insight needs in collaboration with stakeholders, and assess data availability in the warehouse to ensure alignment with business and research objectives.
  • Provide leadership in defining data requirements for reporting, contributing to the enhancement of data models and identifying gaps or improvements in the data infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with the data engineering team to shape and optimise ETL/ELT pipelines that meet analytical and operational reporting needs.
  • Perform quality assurance and validation of reporting datasets to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of insights delivered to stakeholders.
  • Act as a key liaison between business units and technical teams, effectively translating strategic and operational requirements into scalable data and reporting solutions.
  • Monitor dashboard performance and adoption, applying feedback and innovations to improve engagement and value.
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies and trends in business intelligence and analytics, and apply relevant innovations to enhance MWI’s reporting capabilities.

Essential competencies 

  • Qualifications and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or reporting roles, with demonstrated leadership in delivering insight-driven solutions.
    • Proven track record in developing and maintaining interactive dashboards in Power BI that support strategic and operational decision-making.
    • Experience working with data warehouses, including translating business needs into data requirements and identifying data gaps to support reporting outcomes.
    • Technical and Analytical Skills

     

    • Strong SQL skills for data extraction and analysis, with a deep understanding of relational and dimensional data models.
    • Experience using statistical tools such as R and/or Stata to perform data analysis and generate insights for diverse audiences.
    • Working knowledge of data validation techniques, data quality assurance, and ETL processes as they relate to reporting accuracy and reliability.
    • Leadership and Communication
    • Demonstrated ability to lead reporting initiatives, define standards for data visualization, and mentor team members in BI best practices.
    • Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to convey complex data findings to non-technical audiences and senior stakeholders.
    • Strong collaboration skills with experience working across technical and non-technical teams to co-design impactful reporting solutions.

    • Ability to align reporting outputs with organisational goals, assess information needs, and proactively deliver actionable insights that drive continuous improvement.
    • Domain Knowledge
    • Experience with health, research, or First Nations data, particularly within the university, public health, or not-for-profit sectors.
    • Advanced Tools and Practices
    • Understanding of data governance principles including data quality, security, and ethical data use.
    • Relevant professional certifications in Power BI or cloud technologies are advantageous.
